HSE-We Make Getting Started EASY
No high school diploma? Wayne Community College can help.
No one really intends to drop out of high school but stuff happens. Sometimes it’s as simple as misplaced priorities. Other things seem more important-or more fun-and attendance and grades slip. Other times, circumstances such as incarceration or homelessness make education impossible.
The reasons for dropping out are numerous, but the reasons for going back are almost always the same. Most students learn from the real world that they can’t get a decent job without a high school diploma.
And let’s just admit it right up front – not everyone who decides to go to college is ready for college-level classes.
Think about all the successful people who needed to explore life a bit, make a few mistakes, try something different before they decided that a good education really was a priority. Life changes. You change. Goals change. It happens all the time.
Think about the millions of people who got their HSE, improved their math and reading skills, learned English and then went on to earn college degrees and start new careers. You can bet they’re glad that they got another chance to prove themselves.
We all want the same thing: a better life for ourselves and our families. Wayne Community College offers a full range of free Adult Education services, including HSE preparation, to help you improve your life and advance your career.
Earn your HSE
A High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma is accepted by all public and most private colleges and universities, as well as most employers. Getting your HSE diploma involves taking a series of tests designed to measure the skills equal to those represented by a high school diploma. The tests measure writing, social studies, science, reading, and mathematics skills.
Caring instructors to help you learn
Wayne Community College carefully selects instructors for their ability to work with the adult learner. The curriculum ranges from basic-literacy level to twelfth-grade level instruction in reading, writing, social studies, science, and math.
Programs designed just for you
Everyone is different and has different skills and abilities. WCC instructors will assess your current educational level, then design a training program for you.
Registration is easy and quick
Classes are held continually throughout the year with registration during various months. Call 919-739-6908 for information on class locations, schedules, and registration information. Day and evening classes are offered on the main campus at 3000 Wayne Memorial Drive in Goldsboro and at other sites throughout Wayne County.
WCC: More than just the HSE
Wayne Community College Basic Skills Education also aids adults needing the following:
• Adult Basic Education: Adults who have not graduated from high school and high school graduates who need instruction below the ninth grade level may enroll in Adult Basic Education. Instruction is provided in the areas of basic reading, English, math, spelling, and writing. ABE classes help to prepare adults who want to enter an Adult High School Diploma or High School Equivalency class. Students work at their own pace and receive individual help as needed. There is no registration fee and books are provided for student use in the classroom. Students may enroll at any time.
• Adult High School Diploma: Wayne Community College has agreements with both Wayne County Schools and Asheboro City Schools to award the adult high school diploma. As is the case with the traditional high school diploma, students are required to earn a total of 21 units of credit (including those that are transferable from their high school transcripts).
• ESL (English as a Second Language): Acquire and/or improve your reading, writing, and speaking skills if your primary language is not English and your skills are below the level to function effectively in English. The program provides language learners with essential life skills that enable them to function in an English-speaking society.
These classes are also helpful for students who plan on taking HSE or Adult High School Diploma classes or the United States citizenship exam. ESL courses are free and study materials are provided at no cost.
• Online Classes: With Computer-Based Learning, you can improve skills in reading, writing, social studies, science and math; prepare for the HSE test; earn credits toward an Adult High School diploma; or study for the National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) using online educational software. To get started you need to come to a four-day Orientation and Placement Session and let the instructor know you are interested in the Computer-Based Learning program.
