Are you creative? Inquisitive? Have a good imagination? Do you enjoy figuring out how things work and making them work better? Would you like to reduce pollution or create a labor-saving device? If you answered “yes” to any or all of these questions, you may want to consider an engineering degree.

Engineering programs are some of the most popular at colleges and universities across the nation, but do you know why?

Engineers are crucial to improving our quality of life – individually and globally.

WCC Degree Information

Most entry-level engineering jobs require a four-year engineering degree. At Wayne Community College, you have the opportunity to complete the first two years of many typical engineering degrees.

WCC’s Associate in Engineering degree features the same general education, math and science courses required by universities. Students in the program full-time can expect to complete their coursework in two years, if no developmental math and English courses are required. Those interested in WCC’s Engineering program can contact an academic adviser at the college for more specific course information.

In addition to general education courses required for this associate degree, emphasis is placed on engineering courses and math and science courses, such as calculus, differential equations, physics, and chemistry.

Bachelor’s Degree Options and Career Opportunities

WCC will begin offering an engineering curriculum in the fall of 2016.  Engineering graduates will have the option to transfer to four-year schools, such as East Carolina University, N.C. State and the University of North Carolina, to complete their educations. Many other schools, including North Carolina A&T and UNC-Charlotte, also offer engineering degrees, giving graduates a number of educational options from which to choose when considering where they want to complete a bachelor’s degree.

Those transferring from WCC with an associate degree in engineering have a number of engineering fields from which to choose in order to acquire a bachelor’s degree. Civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, agricultural engineering and industrial engineering are just some of the possible options.

Engineering fields offer a high salary potential. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, many engineering fields have median salaries of $70,000 or higher.

Why should you choose Wayne Community College?

WCC’s engineering program is an example of the college recognizing and responding to Eastern North Carolina’s educational needs.  There are many reasons to get started on an engineering degree at WCC, beginning with our mission to meet the educational, training, and cultural needs of the communities it serves.  This mission is achieved by encouraging lifelong learning, establishing positive learning environments, ensuring academic excellence, enhancing economic development and quality of life, and emphasizing multicultural experiences.

Whether you are enrolling straight out of high school or embarking on a career change, WCC offers smaller class sizes, personal attention from instructors and advisers, and lower tuition when compared to the same courses at many four-year colleges and universities.

WCC students are front and center for all activities taking place on campus. Here, students are viewed as individuals with potential waiting to be realized, rather than just warm bodies filling up classrooms. At WCC, our dedicated faculty members give their time, expert advice and attention to each and every student who walks in the door.

General education courses at WCC will encourage you to be creative, detail-oriented, and work well in teams. You will also develop the ability to communicate well, both orally and in writing. All of these skills are important tools engineers need.

In addition to general education classes, the math and science courses engineering students must take will provide a solid background in each of these areas and help approach problems in a more logical and analytical manner. Our faculty includes experienced engineers teaching these courses.

If an engineering career appeals to you, consider making WCC your launching pad and begin your education here. You will find a place from which you can take off and fly in any direction your dreams may take you.

There will always be a need for engineers, both locally and abroad, to apply what they have learned toward developing economic solutions that meet society’s needs. Come study with us, and you could become the next great inventor!
